Jefferson Davis Memorial

I recently visited the Jefferson Davis Memorial in Irwinton GA. This is the location where Davis was captured by Federal troops in 1865. I had a good experience, and would recommend anyone passing through South Georgia take a detour to see the site.

There is a small museum, and a memorial on the site of the capture. There is no squeamishness about displaying the Confederate flag. There is a large Confederate flag flying prominently on private property across the street, visible from the memorial.

The Confederate flag is also on display at the museum, along with a number of Confederate artifacts. There is a short video telling the story of Davis' capture, which was informative and non-biased. The staff was very friendly and helpful. Admission is inexpensive.

The town of Fitzgerald, GA is nearby. It is a beautiful town, founded by Confederate and Union veterans after the war, in the 1890's. There are a lot of nice historic buildings to see there, and a number of good restaurants. If you're coming from Dothan on Hwy. 84, there is a visitor center in Bainbridge GA, with info on historic sites all across GA. Georgia counties are smaller than Alabama counties, and there are more of them, so you pass through quite a few getting anywhere. I saw a number of beautiful old county courthouses along my route, including one in Abbeville, Georgia, on New Year's Day. In a rather picturesque scene, county prisoners in old-style black and white striped uniforms were lounging on the courthouse steps.

I noticed a great many Confederate flags and '56 Georgia flags flying all along my route, much more so than in Alabama. Georgia's Project Wave seems to be working. There is a similar project in Alabama, the Battle Flags Across Alabama Project.

Good to see your driving trips let you get to things like this! (I'm assuming you were out on a run.) It's nice to get out and see the sites and people we care about.

I am still wanting to put a webpage together. I'm going to make some attempts tonight using the Moveable Type program, and maybe I can show you soon what I want to go for.
